アーティスト・イン・レジデンスをテーマに全国から集った参加者が講師とともに思考し、多様な実践のあり方を探る、2泊3日の合宿型ワークショップ「AIR CAMP(エアキャンプ)」。3年目となる「AIR CAMP 2017」は、これまで開催してきた北海道・札幌を飛び出し、陸前高田で開催します。
今年度のテーマは、「生活と創造」。東日本大震災から6年を経て、目まぐるしく変化してきた陸前高田において、今一度、AIRの原点と言える「芸術活動を行いながら、どのように生活を創るか」ということについて考えてみることにしました。陸前高田に暮らす人々の心の復興を目的に立ち上げられた「陸前高田AIR」、著しい経済・社会的発展と共に、実験的手法を取り入れた市民主導のプロジェクトを展開する東南アジアのアート・コレクティブなど、様々な地域において、それぞれの視点で取り組むプロジェクトを取り上げ、講師を招きます。AIRにおける「生活と創造」の可能性、地域との関係性、地域の生活から生まれる創造の可能性を、皆さんとともに見出すことができればと考えています。

  • ウバトサット | Ubatsat
    アーティスト、アクティヴィスト、The Land Foundation メンバー(タイ)

1980年タイ、バンコク生まれ。タイのアーティスト、アクティヴィスト、またキュレーションも行う。The Land Foundationのメンバー。ウバトサットのアートに対する考えは、彼自身を取り巻く関係性や、生活そのものを理解するために機能している。その主な手法は、一度は破局を体験した人々と集団で協働することによって、社会文化的変化を促進し、理解を深め、協働でのクリエイション意識を共有する活動を行うことである。彼の作品と活動は個としての捉えではなく、集団の中で個性を特定付けられる「中間的」なアーティストの存在として、理解することができる。従来とは違った考え方と実践によって、アートをコミュニティまたは生活の中に浸透させる、発想豊かで遊びに戯れるようなアーティストである。

  • アレック・ステッドマン | Alec Steadman
    Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society共同チーフキュレーター(インドネシア)

キュレーター、リサーチャー。設立者であるNindityoとMellaが、設立30年を期に一線を退き、Cemeti – Institute for Art and Societyの共同キュレーターとなる。2016年まで、イギリスのアーツ・カタリストにてキュレーターを務めた。それ以前の活動として、香港のアジア・アート・アーカイブ(AAA)にてエキシビション・スタディーズ・リサーチ・フェロー(2015)、エジプトのコンテンポラリー・イメージ・コレクティブにてアーティスティック・ディレクター(2013)、イタリアのサンドレット・レ・レバウデンゴ財団現代美術館にてキュレーター・イン・レジデンス(2013)、オランダのデ・アペル・キュレトリアル・プログラム(2011-12)等がある。

  • ヌル・アクバル・アロファトゥラ | Nur Akbar Arofatullah
    研究者、Lifepatchの共同創設者(インドネシア)

農業バイオテクノロジー分野の研究者で、現在は東京農工大学大学院生物生産科学専攻に在籍。先端的な研究を行う傍ら、自分でもなぜ作ったかわからないような様々な装置を作ることを趣味としている。現在は、茨城県稲敷郡阿見町に在住し、DIYで取り組む生物学と、汎用・低コストな実験装置の開発に興味を持っている。さらに、茨城大学で、温室管理のためのオープンプラットフォームのユビキタス環境制御システム(UECS-Pi)の導入に取り組みつつ、東京農工大学大学院でトマト苗の熱ショック誘導抵抗性の分子メカニズムを研究中。

  • 畠山直哉 | Naoya Hatakeyama
    写真家(東京都)

1958年岩手県陸前高田市生まれ。筑波大学芸術専門学群にて大辻清司に師事。1984年に同大学院芸術研究科修士課程修了。以降東京を拠点に活動を行い、自然・都市・写真のかかわり合いに主眼をおいた、一連の作品を制作。国内外の数々の個展・グループ展に参加。作品は以下などのパブリック・コレクションに多数収蔵されている。

1980年長野県生まれ。2007年東京藝術大学油画専攻修了。詩人の吉増剛造ゼミ参加。2008年個展『丸石座』詩人の吉増剛造と共演。2010-12年「会津・漆の芸術祭」参加(嘉永蔵/ニ十間蔵/福島)。2011/2012年「ストーンサークルフェスティバル」(大山ふるさと資料館/小牧野遺跡/青森)縄文友の会(田口ランディ、山田スイッチ)と現代のストーンサークル制作。2016年「ストーンプロジェクト」(スウェーデン)、2017年「北アルプス国際芸術祭」(長野)参加。 2014年「大町冬期芸術大学」空間美術コース講師。2010年より「信濃の国 原始感覚美術祭」を主催。

  • ショーネッド・ヒューズ | Sioned Huws
    ダンサー、コレオグラファー(イギリス)

1965年生まれ。1989年にニューヨークのマース・カニングハム・スタジオで学びながら、コンテンポラリーダンスとパフォーマンスを創作し始める。2008年から石川流の師範、石川義野から津軽手踊を学び、現在は岩手で行山流山口派の柿内沢鹿踊を学んでいる。彼女の作品は知覚、記憶、人、振付の構造内での場所、つまり身体的な運動の認識を通して感じられる範囲において、予想外のことを可能にする細部をパターン化するシステムにフォーカスしている。長期にわたって日本と欧州のダンサー、歌手、ミュージシャン、地域社会とコラボレーションするプロジェクトを行っており、青森プロジェクトでは2008年の創立時から芸術監督を務め、世界各地でのツアーも行っている。

  • 日沼禎子 | Teiko Hinuma
    キュレーター、女子美術大学芸術学部 アート・デザイン表現学科アートプロデュース表現領域准教授、陸前高田AIRプログラムディレクター(岩手県、東京都)

女子美術大学芸術学部卒業。ギャラリー運営企画会社、美術雑誌編集者等を経て、1999~2011年まで国際芸術センター青森設立準備室・同学芸員として、アーティスト・イン・レジデンスを中心としたアーティスト支援、プロジェクト、展覧会を多数企画、運営に携わる。さいたまトリエンナーレ2016 プロジェクトディレクター等を歴任。

  • 松山隼 | Jun Matsuyama
    陸前高田AIRコーディネーター、アーティスト(岩手県)

1985年宮城県生まれ。東北芸術工科大学芸術文化専攻修了後、山形で若手クリエイターのシェアアパート「ミサワクラス」を立ち上げ、2009年から2013年まで運営。同大学の助手、ファシリテーター(講師)を勤めた後、2013年より陸前高田AIRのコーディネーター、2015 年より国際ダンス交流プロジェクト「Odori-Dawns-Dance」のコーディネーターを務める。

AIR CAMP is an intensive 3-day workshop focusing on artist-in-residence, in which participants explore and think about the possibility of how diverse residency practices could be. This marks the 3rd year of the workshop, and this year it will take place in Rikuzentakata, a city located in the north east of the mainland Japan.  

This year we will focus on ’Everyday Life and Creation’. Rikuzentakata has been making a drastic transition over the past 6 years since it was severely affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. In such context, we wanted to go back to the fundamental question about artist-in-residence – how could we create a living and sustain artistic practices? We invite guest lecturers from art organisations in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and UK to present and introduce their practices and to share their knowledge and expertise in their own countries and regions and how their practises are associated within and engage with their communities and societies. This workshop is organised in partnership with Rikuzentakata AIR, which was initiated to help relieve local people from the effect of the disasters.

Artist, activist, member of the Land Foundation

Based in Thailand, Ubatsat embraces his own experience to art practice in order to make sense of life and relationship all around him, Promotes socio-cultural change with a collaborative ‘group’ to develop an understanding for people who were once faced a catastrophe to share the feeling of collaborative creation. All proved his working and living as being He is the artist who doesn’t frame himself with individuality but the artist who is ‘in-between’ and ‘indentify’ with group. The frolic artist who lives and works creatively in accord with the way art that infiltrates into community or works with another discipline.

 

Alec Steadman

Curator, researcher. Co-Chief Curator at Cemeti — Institute for Art and Society

Steadman previously occupied various roles including: Curator, Arts Catalyst, London, United Kingdom (2015—2016); Exhibition Studies Research Fellow, Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong (2015); Artistic Director, Contemporary Image Collective, Cairo, Egypt (2013—2014); Curator in Residence, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy (2013), and Head of Exhibitions, Zoo Art Enterprises, London, United Kingdom (2005—2010).

 

Nur Akbar Arofatullah

Researcher, Co-Founder of Lifepatch

Akbar is a Researcher currently studying at the Department of Biological Production Science, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) as a researcher in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology. His hobby is making equipment which sometimes he himself does not know the reason why he made it. Currently, he lives in Ami Town, Inashiki District, Ibaraki, Japan. He is interested in Do-It-Yourself (DIY) biology and the development of generic low-cost lab equipment. Now he is working on the Introduction of Open Platform Ubiquitous Environment Control System (UECS-Pi) for Greenhouse Management at Ibaraki University, and his Ph.D. research at TUAT is on the molecular mechanisms of heat shock-induced resistance in tomato plants.

 

Naoya Hatakeyama

Born in 1958 in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, Hatakeyama, a student of Kiyoji Otsuji, completed graduate studies at Tsukuba University in 1984. Since then, Hatakeyama has been based in Tokyo, a city which has served as a model from which he has developed a body of work concerned largely with the relationship between nature, the city and photography. In addition to his participation in numerous solo and group exhibitions, Hatakeyama’s photographs are found in public collections including the National Museum of Modern Art, Osaka; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; the Swiss Foundation for Photography, Winterthur; la Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

 

Nobuyuki Sugihara

Artist, Director of Shinano Primitive Sense Art Festival

Born in Nagano, Japan, 1980. In 2007 Sugihara obtained a Master’s degree in Oil Painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. He attended the poet Yoshimasu Gozo’s Seminar in Waseda University. In 2008 Sugihara did a performance co-starring with the poet Gozo called Round Stone Constellation. He held some exhibitions at Aizu-Urushi Art Festival between 2010 and 2012 (Kaei-warehouse, Nizyukken-warehouse, Fukushima). During 2011 and 2012’s Stone Circle Festival, Sugihara worked on the production of modern stone circle with Jomontonokai (Randy Taguchi, Yamada Switch). He did an artist residency in Spring 2012 in Awashima AIR. During the same year he did the Jara Island International Baggat Art Exhibition in Korea. He has been a lecturer on the spatial art course at Omachi Winter University of the Arts since 2014. Sugihara has been organising the Shinano Primitive Sense Art Festival every summer since 2010.

 

Sioned Huws

Director, Choreographer and Dancer

Since 2013 Huws has studied and continues to dance the Deer Dance of Iwate, Japan, with dancers of Kakinaizawa Shishi-odori Gyouzan-ryu. Her current project Odori-Dawns-Dance in collaboration with traditional and contemporary dancers and choreographers’ reveals the poetry of dance and community, as a large family, an aggregate, the situations, and the friendships. With a particular focus to the Shishi-odori, an animistic ritual dance, a prayer in action, derived from the complexity of community, landscape and mythology. Our dance stories passed on through generations, living with the natural world, in harmony, discord and everything in-between, even nowadays. Dance reaffirms the ground we stand on ‘Asobe waga tsure’ – ‘Come lets play my friends’ Deer Dance song words.

2016-17 In collaboration with choreographers – Zan Yamashita, Reina Kimura, actress and performer Honami Shimizu and Kakinaizawa Shishi-odori.

 

Teiko Hinuma

Curator, Joshibi University of Art and Design – Art Department – Art Design Course – Art Production Field – Associate Professor, Programme Director at Rikuzentakata AIR

Hinuma graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design, Art Department. She has been working for gallery management planning companies and in art magazine publishing. Between 1999 and 2011, working as a Curator at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre Preparation Room, she did some management and planned many exhibitions, projects, artists support, always focusing on Artist-in-Residence. She did successive jobs, for example Project Director at Saitama Triennale in 2016.

 

Jun Matsuyama

Coordinator at Rikuzentakata AIR, Artist

Born in 1985 in Miyagi prefecture, he took Civilisation as a major at Tohoku University of Art & Design. After he graduated, he started “Misawa Class”, a share apartment for young creators, and ran it from 2009 to 2013. He has been working as an assistant and a facilitator (lecturer) at the same Tohoku University, and after that in 2013 he became Rikuzentakata AIR Coordinator. From 2015 he is also working as a Coordinator for “Odori-Dawns-Dance” International Dance Exchange Programme Project.

The Land Foundation (Thailand)

It all started in 1998, when Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija and Kamin Lertchaiprasert acquired a piece of land in a village Near Chiang Mai, Thailand, in order to start a new land use project. An art centre was built there in 2002, and the actual Land Foundation was founded in 2004. It is an alternative society, developing arts based on interaction and information sharing, sustainable agriculture and self-development through meditation. Up to now they have been experimenting community building projects, whose models are even been used overseas.

 

Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society (Indonesia)

Founded in 1988 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia as a site for exchange, providing space for artists to exhibit their work. In 1995, the then newly founded Cemeti Foundation (since 2007 operating independently as Indonesian Visual Art Archive, IVAA) was the first organization to start documenting contemporary visual art in Indonesia.

Now in its 30th year, Cemeti’s artist founders Nindityo Adipurnomo and Mella Jaarsma, have stepped aside from the day-to-day running of the organization, staying on to guide and advise as chairs of the board. As a new team takes the helm, we want to take a moment for public reflection, thinking collectively with you about the possible futures of Cemeti. Part of this process is the changing of Cemeti’s name from the former Cemeti Art House to Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society. Our new subtitle takes as a starting point the idea of “instituting” as a collective social process in which we find forms for shared urgencies and ideologies.

 

Lifepatch – citizen initiative in art, science and technology (Indonesia)

Lifepatch is a cross-disciplinary organisation working on art, science and technology. Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, it was formed in 2012 in order to research, explore, and develop the presence of technology, natural resources, and human resources in the surrounding areas. They also made a lot of installation art in festivals, including the Jakarta and Yogyakarta Biennales. Their goal is to provide a wider space for the diversity of member practices and spur the creativity of each member in a role in a collaborative activity. Do It Yourself (DIY) and Do It With Others (DIWO) is the passion that Lifepatch holds in practice to spur the emergence of a new and straightforward pattern and system of individual and community creative processes, as well as interaction between individuals in the community work series. Willing to make more open its activities and development results to the public, Lifepatch initially moved by relying on communication over the internet. As of now, in order to improve the collaboration between various people and communities, and share their development outcomes, they opened a studio aiming to build domestic and international collaboration bridges. They are having many workshops on fermentation process, programming and other technologies. In 2014, they started an art project called “HackteriaLab” using open source, in collaboration with Hackteria Network.

 

Shinano Primitive Sense Art Festival (Japan)

The eighth year primitive sensory art festival does the festival itself. Festival is a place of meeting beyond genre, crossing generations, the ultimate workshop. Art = stage. Body = dance. Sound = song, music, word spirit. Food = Feast, we create the festival as a total art. Artists as Marebito [spirits from divine realm] who visit from the outside make the festival with people in the land, people visiting the land. We create the “The Water’s Edge Ritual” on the shores of Lake Kisaki, where the water begins.

NPO S-AIR was established in 1999 with partial funding by The Agency for Cultural Affairs, to run an artist-in-residence programme in Sapporo, Japan. Since it was approved to be a non-profit organisation in 2005, S-AIR started a collaborative residency project with ICC, in which we have been building networks with Japanese and international artists as well as art institutions in Japan and overseas. Until now, S-AIR has hosted 92 participants in total from 36 countries over the period of 18 years.

Natsukashii Mirai Sozo Co. is a general incorporated association / social business network cooperation based company working on reconstruction, established in September 2011, aiming to support Rikuzentakata managers, and is considered as Iwate prefecture small to medium companies entrepreneurs association. Their purpose is to build a better social capital future, developing projects solving social issues with the use of local social resources. Aiming to employ about 500 persons, after having promoted several businesses, they are planning to stop their development cooperation activity within 10 years.

 

Rikuzentakata Artist in Residence Program

Initiated in early winter 2013, the Rikuzentakata Artist-in-Residence Program is an initiative that aims to bring domestic and overseas artists who are drawn to Tohoku to reside in its community and, while nestled among the lives of the residents, gather important memories and record and convey their experiences. Mediated through video, music, photos, and dance connecting traditions with the present, the artists researched the thoughts or things of people that have been physically lost, attempting expressions through visual or physical movement to leave behind subtle memories. We hope the program would be a place, in which everyone can reflect on thoughts, the present, past, and the reminiscent future.
